Alen Younge is a the eldest son of a noble family deeply in debt, and his penchant for fun and levity are viewed as a threat. He leaves his family 'in pursuit of scholarly interests' hoping to find a wealthy bride and thus save his family without giving up his freedom.

Lady Iniola Bellerose is a beautiful, wealthy lady but possesses an stark lack of charm and unsuitable scholarly interests that render her unfit for marriage. She is painfully proper and modest, carefully keeping her eyes veiled at all times, though it is an old-fashioned, out-of-use tradition. She is frequently very snobby and rude.

Prince Jadon of the Glass City is spoiled, but has a kind heart and a cautious bearing. He tends to take his wealth and station for granted, and can be snappish when people are limited by their social or monetary status because he doesn't understand.

Ruebella is a runaway slave. Generous and sweet as a child, years of slavery have made her brave, determined and confident but also cruel and tempermental. She is stubborn to a fault and would rather bash her head against a wall than go around if going around is someone else's idea.

Rui Abbiati is mysterious and has a spiffy onyx earring usually hidden by his hair. He appears to be poor, but no one really knows anything about his background. He is cheerful, smart and kind, but very vain and a horrible skirt-chaser. He seems to have a deep and abiding hatred for Lady Iniola.

Princess Arellei is friendly, charming, beautiful and powerful, but also snobby, vain and rude to those she believes to be beneath her, especially Baron Gyp. She has a notable temper, and her two companions Duchess Rosaleen and Marquess Tane as well as her fiance, Archduke Barak, go to great lengths to keep her temper in check. Baron Gyp goes out of his way to infuriate her, since he hates her as much as she hates him.		Empress Aressela is the beautiful, powerful Empress of the Universes and has reigned for many years. She is the mother of Princess Arellei, and though she is kinder, she is even more prone to snobbishness towards non-nobles than her daughter is to Baron Gyp.

Archduke Barak is rather wild and crazy, and one of the few people able to calm an angry Princess Arellei down. Though engaged to the Princess for political reasons, rumor has it that the Queen initiated the betrothal after he and the Princess fell in love. He was one of her companions until the betrothal, at which time Marquess Tane took his place.	Viscountess Rialorelei is an elegant, sharp-witted and beautiful noblewoman and a good friend to Princess Arellei despite her status. She is the least often present of Arellei's court because, unlike the rest of the court, Rialorelei's parents are dead and she is expected to bear the full duty of caring for her subjects in the Sixth Universe.

Duchess Rosaleen is the Princess' Female Companion and thus quite adept at avoiding Arellei's temper. She is also in charge of providing chaperonage for the Princess. She is extremely wild, though she works hard to keep this in check while at court.		Baron Gyp hates Princess Arellei, Princess Arellei hates him. End of story. But no matter how he behaves towards her, he's actually rather kind and charming.

Countess Lucifa is extremely sweet, extremely shy and a brilliant strategist. She is also probably the most beautiful member of the Princess' court. Though not an official companion of Arellei, she often steps in to take Rosaleen's place as Female Companion when Rosaleen can't stand the court anymore or has duties in the Third Universe to attend to.		Marquess Tane serves as the Princess' Male Companion in place of Archduke Barak once the Princess and the Archduke become engaged. He is in charge of Arellei's security and takes his job very seriously, as he does everything in life.
